Dr. Mudd was convicted of being part of a conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth jumped to the stage after shooting Lincoln, breaking his leg. Mudd put Booth's leg in a cast while he was on the run after the assassination. He nearly got the death penalty for it. Instead he was sentenced to life in prison at Fort Jefferson.

Kiln

This kiln was used to heat the shot fired from cannon in the fort. The red-hot shot was meant to set ships on fire when it hit.
Cuban Raft

Cuban raft used to escape Cuba and land at Fort Jefferson. Since the Dry Tortugas are part of the U.S., this means that they are automatically granted asylum if they can get off the boat and onto dry land.
